Game 12: Ottawa Senators v. Atlanta Thrashers
Atlanta Thrashers at Ottawa Senators, Oct 31, 2009 2:00 PM EDT
The Senators are looking to bounce back from an ugly loss on Thursday despite the absence of star centre Jason Spezza, while the Thrashers are are looking to rebound from a loss to the Capitals on Thursday despite the absence of star winger Ilya Kovalchuk. Plus it's an afternoon game, and it's on CBC. Great way to get Halloween started!
Darren's Take:
Unfortunately, the Sens are missing their most creative offensive player (Spezza) and arguably their best defensive d-man (Anton Volchenkov), so they'll have to work as a team to overcome these deficiencies. In Spezza's absence, Ottawa will be looking for big games from Daniel Alfredsson, Alex Kovalev, Milan Michalek, and the surprising Jarkko Ruutu, who is off to a torrid start, at least by his standards. On the defensive side, Ottawa will have to shut down Rich Peverley, on a six-game point streak with seven points, and Christoph Schubert, who has to be considered a threat because he used to play for the Senators.
As you can each and every Sens game, join in the fun within he comments section.

Crap, Spezza's still out
I actually like the sound of Michalek-Regin-Shannon, though. I don’t like what that does for our third line. We’re going to need the fourth liners to step it up today. How often do you say that in a game?
wasn’t M-R-S the second line last game?

I was at work until 3am last night and this game starts at 11am. The NHL did not take my project launches into account when creating the schedule. Jerks.
Those bastards in the NHL
Still, I love afternoon games (EST)

What you'd call him likely isn't family friendly...
But there are no families here.

Wearing the blacks on Halloween?
Dig the choice. Still hate the sweaters.
Whoa, Kovy’s nose looks brutal tonight.

Is that their fourth line?
It’s hard to know, they all just look like a fourth line…

Yeah, they opened with 4th
which is why Clouston matched.
You know, I was literally just amount to post an over/under on when the first Sens penalty would be.
Schubert!
Still taking brutal penalties… at least Kovalev’s alright.

Getting muscled off the puck by an eighteen year old?
Really, Campoli? Evander Kane is good, but come on.

That PP actually was quite decent to start out with.

I like that Fisher responded to the guy who hit Alfie
Just a good, clean hit as a response. Great stuff.

Fisher was great to start the season. And we’re missing Spezza. This hurts.

no kidding. they were doing it for the first 5-6 games! What happened?!

Who is this Pavelec?
And what has he done to the real Pavelec?

HOLY SHIT!
Almost smoked Pavelec in the maskless face!

That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Cheechoo's having a bounce-back game
He at least looks decent, rather than liability-ous.

he’s looked very good tonight.
Shannon’s looked a lot better, too.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
For sure.
Good presence in the defensive zone especially for Shannon.

Much better period, but still can’t score.

Ooooooh, a Vesa Toskala sighting!
That’s exciting.

Hahaha, the Dumb & Dumber costumes were good, but the Cherry & MacLean was perfect.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Something that worries me:
does anyone else worry that because the team kind of sucks without Volch & Spezza that they’re going to be rushed back into action before their injuries are fully healed?
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Not too much
It’s still pretty early in the season, I’d be a bit surprised if they were rushed back. But crazier things have certainly happened.

Actually, I'm kind of scared Alfredsson might be injured
He hasn’t looked like himself tonight.
by Peter Raaymakers on Oct 31, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Honestly!
Did you really think passing to Cheechoo gave you a better chance to score?
by Peter Raaymakers on Oct 31, 2009 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions
They're stepping up.
They just can’t get it past Pavel
Someone unexpected needs to
Alfie can’t always do it. Kovalev needs to.

Peverley was a No Habs No! contributor
So he’s got that going for him.

Sens need a goal, I think. That might boost morale.

Well, the shots are 32-6

Galley's right. Neil has been strong for Ottawa.
Neil, Lee, and Shannon, each have pretty strong games.

no kidding. He’s been great tonight. Maybe it’s playing with Foligno that makes him better.
Silver Seven: the Daniel Alfredsson of Ottawa Senators blogs.
Unless you have have just swallowed three pucks
and that counts.
Ok, here we go.
We’re scoring something now, right?
Pavelec has put forth the best goaltending performance I’ve seen in ages. I can’t remember a goalie standing on his head this much in a regular season game.
